Cataract Surgery Q & A

What are cataracts?

A cataract affects the eye by clouding the natural lens, which is located behind the iris and pupil. Most cataracts develop with aging, however, cataracts can also be present at birth or occur as the result of an injury to the eye. Cataracts can also be the result of diseases like diabetes or long-term use of certain medications, such as steroids.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Cataracts cloud the eye and causes blurred vision that cannot be corrected even with glasses. As cataracts worsen, some symptoms may include:

  • Double vision in one or both eyes.
  • Colors that appear faded or less vibrant.
  • Glare from sunlight and artificial light, including oncoming headlights when driving at night.

What is the treatment for cataracts?

Treatment for cataracts involves surgery. The ophthalmologists  at American Eye Institute will remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear implant. We offer the most advanced, premium implants for patients suffering from cataracts. This includes both and presbyopia and astigmatism-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs) that can restore a full range of vision and often eliminate the need for eyeglasses. We offer an exciting, innovative, and new lens called Tecnis Symfony lens. This is the first IOL lens in the United States that provides an extended range of focus, allowing a fuller range of high-quality vision.
